Natalie Tran has been known to me personally, having known her family since the mid-1980's, after I returned from a three-year stint with BBC London. Natalie’s parents and her older sister came to Australia as refugees in mid-1981. Mr. Luong Tran was a teacher of Vietnamese literature in Vietnam, and we met each other through our work on the Vietnamese Syllabus Committee for the NSW Higher School Certificate. Mrs. Hien Tran was a lawyer in Vietnam, however she was unable to practise her profession in Australia.
Like many other Vietnamese intellectuals in the same situation, she accepted a humble job to support the family. Today both Natalie's parents are retired.In early 1990s, I invited Mr. Tran to work as a part-time tutor in a “Vietnamese as a Working Language ” Course Unit, in our BA’s Degree Course (Interpreting &Translation) at the then University of Western Sydney, Macarthur (UWS-M), presently University of Western Sydney, Bankstown Campus.
My relationship with Natalie’s parents is not just on a professional level, but on a personal and social level as well--attending parties, outings, weekends away and drives in the countryside. Natalie’s older sister, Isabel, is a lawyer, and is like an adopted daughter to my wife from when she was six years old--a close association that we both cherish. My daughter Pamela grew up with Natalie and her sister and shared many happy birthday parties. Natalie herself, even at a young age, used to dress up and entertain us with her own particular act. It was obvious from the beginning that she was destined to be a good communicator. At my nephew’s wedding, she acted as the English-speaking MC together with me for the wedding guests.
At the party celebrating my PhD, as well as my birthday, Natalie played the violin accompanied by Hoang Ngoc Tuan on the guitar. During the succeeding years we did not socialise as much, but recently, through my daughter Pamela, I found Natalie on YouTube, and renewed our relationship with the family. It was great to share Natalie’s success with the family. The article in the Sydney Morning Herald first drew attention to her work, and as subsequently translated into Vietnamese for world-wide distribution.
Many have been interested in interviewing her, including SBS Australia, Vietnamese broadcasts, but as yet she has not granted such interviews.
For the past few months, the Toronto-based VietSun Magazine, has run several issues with my articles and have asked for more contributions from myself. Their Feb-March issue has just been published with the article about my pet subject “Roulette: The Wheel of Opportunity.” The magazine is very interested in hearing about successful Vietnamese abroad and what they have achieved, and have asked if they could either write about these successful émigrés, or better still, I interview them if possible, and they will follow up with interviewing me.
Thinking along these lines, I feel I should interview Natalie Tran, as she is apparently “a hot item” on YouTube, taking it from the perspective of a close friend of the family and knowing her as “a bright button” from a very young age.
Q1. What is your motivation for doing what you do, and when did you first get the idea of creating such a website?
A2. I read about a website called YouTube in the newspapers about two years ago and decided I would see what this website was. I soon discovered it was a great way to communicate with people around the globe and I enjoy making videos in the online community.
Q2. Your father recently told me that you started doing an Education Degree, however, you did not complete it? What was the reason for changing “mid-stream”?
A2. Teaching is an occupation I have always admired. My father and many teachers in my life showed me how important good teachers are. I guess at this stage of my life however, there are a few things I would still like to get done and experience. My new degree is a relaxed one that enables me to explore these paths.
Q3. The Vietnamese dream of children becoming doctors, dentists, or pharmacists. You will be able to perhaps realise your own dream. Maybe parental influence played a part in the path you are pursuing. Is this so, what part did your father and mother play in the development of your personality as it stands today?
A3. My parents have influenced me greatly as a person. They’ve been extremely supportive of my making videos and any other ventures I decide to take. They are really fun people who make me laugh a lot and I’m sure that’s where my attraction to humour stems from.
Q4. From watching you on YouTube, I see that you show great insight into common everyday happenings and life. This has proved of great appeal as evidenced by your 150,000 subscribers. Where did you acquire the necessary body language, in terms of facial expressions and bodily gestures, as well as verbal skills to become such a good communicator?
A4. Everything I do on YouTube is very “home-grown”. I’m just telling stories the way I would with close friends and family. I’m not very reserved when I tell stories in my videos, which probably is a little strange, but YouTube is a community I have been a part of for a few years so I’m quite comfortable doing so.
Q5. With your popularity you have obviously received positive feedback. However, on such a public website, there is the possibility of negative and sleazy comments and feedback. If you have ever received such, how have you coped with it?
Q5. Yes, there are always a few negative messages or comments. At the end of the day though, that has to be expected in such an open environment and most of the time, the comments are made by people who go on to the Internet with the specific goal to be negative. At the end of the day though, positive messages always outweigh the negative and they’re the ones I make videos for.
Q6. As human beings, people long to become rich or famous or both. From what you said about not wishing for this at this stage, do you think what you are doing could lead to better things other than having a Degree in Digital Media? And if there are better things, what would you imagine they could be?
A6. I don’t really have my heart set on anything at the moment. Hopefully Digital Media will lead to something however at the end of the day, all I’m worried about is being happy and knowing that the people I love are well.

Q1. Động lực nào khiến cháu thực hiện những gì cháu đang làm, và ý nghĩ tạo dựng một mạng “website” của cháu bắt đầu từ hồi nào vậy?
A1. Khoảng hai năm trước đây khi đọc được trên báo một mạng “website” có tên là YouTube, cháu bèn vào coi xem mạng này ra sao. Thì không lâu sau đó cháu khám phá ra là “website” này một phương tiện giao lưu tuyệt vời giữa những người trên toàn cầu với nhau, nên cháu có ý muốn làm băng “vi-đê-ô” để phổ biến trên mạng trực tuyến cho cộng đồng.
Q2. Bố cháu mới đây cho bác biết là lúc đầu cháu chọn học văn bằng Cử nhân Giáo dục, mà rồi cháu không tiếp tục học cho xong cấp bằng đó. Lí do gì khiến cháu chuyển “ngành học” vậy?
A2. Dạy học là một ngành nghề mà cháu hằng trân quí. Thân phụ cháu và nhiều thầy/cô giáo khác đã cho cháu thấy được tầm quan trọng của các bậc thầy giỏi là như thế nào. Tuy vậy, cháu cho rằng ở giai đoạn này trong đời cháu, có một vài điều cháu vẫn muốn thực hiện và trải nghiệm. Văn bằng cử nhân cháu mới chọn học ở đại học giúp cháu mầy mò khai phá những chặng đường này một cách thoải mái thư dãn.
Q3. Cha mẹ Việt Nam thường là mong cho con cái học thành bác sĩ, nha sĩ, hay dược sĩ. Cháu có lẽ sẽ thực hiện được niềm mơ ước của cháu. Chắc là ảnh hưởng của cha mẹ cháu đã dự phần vào con đường cháu đang theo đuổi. Nếu đúng vậy, thì bố mẹ cháu đã có phần hành gì liên quan đến sự phát triển cá tính của cháu như cháu có hiện nay?
A3. Bố mẹ cháu đã có ảnh hưởng rất nhiều đến cá nhân cháu. Cả hai vị đã yểm trợ cháu hết mình trong việc làm “vi-đê-ô” và các toan tính “táo bạo” khác mà cháu định làm. Cả hai người đều rất tếu, làm cho cháu tức cười hoài à. Cháu tin chắc là óc say mê hài hước của cháu cũng từ đó mà nẩy sinh.
Q4. Do coi cháu trên mạng YouTube, bác thấy là cháu có nhận thức rất rõ về những chuyện xảy ra trong cuộc sống thường ngày. Tính chất cực kì hấp dẫn của những mẩu chuyện cháu kể đã thể hiện qua bằng chứng là có 150.000 người đăng kí vào coi. Làm sao mà cháu có được cái khả năng sử dụng “ngôn ngữ không lời”, hiểu theo cách diễn tả trên gương mặt và qua cử chỉ điệu bộ, đồng thời lại có cả khả năng sử dụng “ngôn ngữ dùng lời” để trở thành một cô gái vừa xinh đẹp, duyên dáng mà lại vừa nói năng hấp dẫn như thế?
A4. Mọi chuyện cháu thực hiện trên YouTube thì rất ư là “cây nhà lá vườn”. Cháu chỉ kể những mẩu chuyện giống như những mẩu chuyện cháu kể cho các bạn bè thân quen và những người trong gia đình nghe thôi hà. Có điều cháu không quá e dè, dè dặt khi trò chuyện trong băng “vi-đê-ô” -- nói thế chắc nghe có phần hơi lạ, nhưng YouTube là một cộng đồng mà cháu đã là một thành viên từ mấy năm nay rồi, nên cháu cảm thấy hoàn toàn thoải mái khi làm việc đó.
Q5. Vốn được nhiều người ưa chuộng, cháu tất nhiên là nhận được những phản hồi tích cực, thuận lợi, ngợi khen. Tuy thế, trên một mạng “website” công cộng như thế, thì cũng có khả năng là có những nhận xét và những phản hồi tiêu cực, chỉ trích, bôi bác. Nếu cháu đã có nhận được những gì như thế, thì cháu xử lí ra sao?
A5. Dạ, Cháu có nhận được. Bao giờ cũng có một vài phản hồi hay nhận xét tiêu cực. Nhưng nói cho cùng, thì đó là những gì tất phải có trong một môi trường cởi mở như thế, vả lại, đa phần những nhận xét đó là do những người họ lên mạng “Internet”, chỉ với một mục tiêu cụ thể là “tiêu cực”. Nhưng dù gì thì gì, những thông tin phản hồi tích cực bao giờ cũng vượt trội những phản hồi tiêu cực và chính vì vậy mà cháu làm băng “vi-đê-ô” phục vụ cho những phản hồi tích cực đó.
Q6. Thông thường đã là con người, thì ai cũng mong có danh, có lợi hoặc có cả hai. Theo như cháu nói, thì cháu không màng đến những chuyện đó ở giai đoạn này, nhưng cháu có nghĩ là những gì cháu đang làm hiện giờ sẽ dẫn đến những chuyện tốt đẹp hơn chỉ là để lo cho một Văn bằng Cử nhân về Truyền thông Kĩ thuật Số không? Nếu có những cơ hội tốt đẹp hơn, liệu cháu có hình dung được đó là những cơ hội gì không nhỉ?
A6. Cháu thực sự không mấy để tâm đến chuyện gì như thế vào lúc này. Có điều hi vọng là ngành “Truyền thông Kĩ thuật Số” sẽ đưa cháu đến một cái gì đó, tuy vậy nói cho cùng, thì tất cả những gì cháu quan tâm lúc này là làm sao mình được vui vẻ và biết rằng những người mình thương yêu được khỏe mạnh, an bình là tốt rồi.
